Guide: A Bollywood Musical Epic

guide Guide: A Bollywood Musical Epic

"Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai, Aaj phir marne ka iraada hai."

This song, from a nearly 50 year old movie - Guide, remains with us even today. Just like, Gaata Rahe Mera Dil to that romantic in-memory-of-him-song  Din Dhal Jaaye, Guide is a movie which brings emotion to the forefront through music, exceptionally composed by the genius SD Burman.

Winning 6 Fimfares out of 9 nominations, Guide is an epic of a movie - especially for all those cinematic bluffs. With idyllic actors like Dev Anand and Waheeda Raheman as a part of Vijay Anand's work, the movie hit the box office and worked its wonders. Guide's songs and lyrics are still a part of every Indian's musical vocabulary, with content, that satisfies both the musician and the audience.  While the plot moves nowhere with most songs, the quality and the necessity of the songs and the emotion that reflects through each one, makes them vitally important. Noted for this and more, the music of SD Burman in this movie has been nominated and has also won accolades many a places. The Cannes Film Festival, showcased a 120 minute version of the film - that too 42 years after it's release.

Musically mastered and re-mastered in many other films and albums, the songs still have their beauty intact. With the theme of dreams and the want of both life and death intertwined, the music of Aaj Phir is exceptionally catchy and stands not only as a memorable piece of work by SD Burman but also goes out to what remains of the broken heart.

Dil Dhal Jaaye and Tere Mere Sane, sung by Mohammad Rafi too stand the test of time and remain provably etched in most music lover’s bodies and souls. With soulful and somehow explicitly feelings being foolishly expressed in these numbers, SD Burman reminded us that even with time, feelings never die.

Unanswered questions lay deep within every soul while the voice of SD Burman asked, Wahaan Kaun Hai Tera. Along with all of this also came the cheesy playful side - Saiyaan Beimaan, sung by Lata Mangeshkar which added the tangy naughtiness that was missing from the soundtrack.

Some other tracks include Allah Megh De Paani De and Tere Mere Sapne. While they are not the most prominent of the lot they remain a part of the movie plot.

Covering most emotions, the 9 tracks of this movie remain highly rated and always do remain highly recommended. So go ahead, hear them if you haven't. They are a necessity. Literally. At least if you care enough about music that rocked generations, in the most soothing way possible.

PS: Movie buffs, the film's rated 8.5 on IMDB.
