Bengaluru Footprints 2009

The weather is gradually changing; pollution levels are on the rise and trees seem to be disappearing from what used to be the garden city of India. However, there is a growing consciousness on environmental issues, eco friendly policies and sustainability in all fields of development today.
The young students of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication understand that the need of the hour is to generate consciousness, provide a platform for active participation and take a look at the entire environmental paradigm within which we operate. The green battle is on!! The media has always been a powerful vehicle in bringing about a change in society. To a large extent the responsibility of exploring various ways of creating a sense of consciousness about an issue lies in the hands of the media. The green battle is a representation of the fight against all forces that threaten the future of our environment. Through its primary theme, Green Battle, the focus of Footprints 2009 will lie on how the media has as well as can create interest and awareness on this critical issue and battle out to go green.
The speakers for this theme include personalities like Dr. A Ravindra (Ex-Chief Secretary; presently Advisor to Chief Minister on Urban Development; Chairman, Centre for Sustainable Development),Gerry Martin (India's first adventurer on National Geographic Channel, wildlife conservationist),Suresh Heblikar (noted film maker and environmentalist),Dr. Yallapa Reddy (Former Secretary, Environment & Ecology Department, Noted Environmentalist) and Mr Pravinjith K.P (Director, Paradigm Environment Strategies, Bengaluru; Noted Speaker on Environmental Issues).
The seminar will include discussions on how the media can contribute to generating awareness, formulating solutions in our day to day activities, use of technology and several other means by which it can and should propagate the Green Battle.
The second theme for the day is “The resurgence of Kannada in Media”. With city emerging as a cosmopolitan entity, the students believe that the culture of the city should not be forgotten and compromised. There are conscious efforts being made to inculcate Namma Bhashay in the media and other forms of cultural expressions. Kannada is in a large way alive along the lines of music, dance, theatre, film, television and other media as well as performing arts. In this year’s Footprints, SIMC intends to trace these attempts and encourage the blooming movement to keep our sakkath language alive!
Some of the speakers for this theme are Arundathi Nag, Sri. A.S Murthy, Rachana Krishnamurthy and Chitrashree Kadam.
The day will also see two Young Communicator Awards being given out to recognize the contributions of the local youth in today’s world of Media. As part of an effort to provide the cities NGO’s with a platform to conduct their activities or network with each other and the personalities present, an NGO exhibition is being organised. Other attractions include a dance performance by AryaVarta, one of the most popular college dance troupes in Bangalore.
Students from all leading undergraduate colleges, Pre university colleges, ISC schools and other Media schools are expected to be present for the event. An article writing contest as well as a photography contest, with topics directly related to the green battle is also being organised for all participants.
The event will take place on 14th November from 9:30 a.m. at Symbiosis International University, 1st Phase, Electronic City, Bangalore.
