Theobroma, in Greek, means the food of the Gods. Indeed, as one enters the tiny, quaint Theobroma, nestled in a corner, behind tall trees, one really wonders if they are in the ever busy and ever noisy Colaba.
As soon as you enter the café [for want of any other word!], the aroma of freshly baked brownies intoxicates your senses. I always feel I was born only so that I could enter such places! But seriously, the walnut brownies there sell like hot cakes! Talk about metaphorical speech. One can also have the chocolate chip brownie and the espresso brownie, both of which are as good. However, the walnut brownie remains a clear winner, served comfortably warm, on a pristine white plate with a tiny fork. You need just one bite to realise the perfection with which it has been baked; not to forget, the dollops of love and affection!
Theobroma also offers breads, rolls and the usual tea and coffee. They have sandwiches as well, but, somehow, the size of the same has been consistently decreasing over my last few visits. As such they qualify as a one-time affair only.
Their specialty is of course, the mouth-watering desserts. Whether it is the seductive kahlua torte or the heavenly tiramisu, every item on the menu is amazing! And if you are as big a sucker for chocolate as I am, you have to try the Risky Rider. The only risk it entails is the calories one might put on after being consumed by its sheer sight! The Risky Rider is tastefully presented in a boat shaped bowl and is a mish-mash of fudge, chocolate ice cream, lots of nuts and hot chocolate sauce [they might make adjustments to suit the chocolate challenged]! Trust me; this should not be shared! Though this dessert faintly reminded me of the Nirula’s Hot Chocolate Fudge, the thing about Theobroma is simply the feel of it. The place is brimming with people, yet retains its individuality.
Nevertheless, add this place to the n number of places to visit to your bucket list. And as an age old jingle goes – No one can eat just one!
