“Cycling through thirteen countries in four months is not as easy as it seems to be”, says Irish man, Mr. Jake Bullough, who had his debut in the world of literary arts with his book Curious Companions in which he has penned down some of the most exhilarating memories of his journey he promises to remember for his entire life.
On the evening of 20th of March 2009 the very eventful book of Mr. Jake Bullough was launched at the India Art Gallery, Pune amidst his various charcoal sketches and paintings which were again based on the various sights he witnessed during the journey and not to forget the bicycle which was Jake’s only constant companion throughout the journey stood like a King in the middle of the room.
Unlike most other book launches nowadays which are very commercialized, Curious Companions was launched with a personal touch. The audience was first warmed up with snippets from the journey teamed with soothing appropriate music composed by Bullough’s favorite Irish bands. Looking at the video clips itself, one will experience the self motivation behind the journey. The plush green valleys beautifully contrasted the snowing winters and the peddling continued on for Jake through romance, hostility, friendliness, curiosity, varied cultures and scenery.
A very friendly gesture followed when Mr. Sharan, a very close friend of Jake’s read out a passage from the book describing his entry into Budapest. Ms. Madhvi, another close associate of Jake, read out a passage describing one of the nights spent in Turkey and finally it was another close friend of Jake who read out a passage describing the very friendly Iran. Everyone could tell how emotionally mixed the moment was for Mr. Bullough.
Finally the self-confessed shy speaker, Jake himself came on stage and shared with the audience the bitter-sweet experiences of his bicycle trip and enthralled the audience with his charming smile inviting them to buy a copy of his book and other painting or sketch if someone took interest in it. Although I do know quite a bit about the book by now, I am not going to spoil your fun of reading it and in case you do think that one of your wall is still looking empty, feel free to adorn it with one of Bullough’s creative compositions still on display at the India Art Gallery, Off Senapati Bapat Road.
