"ek chutki sindoor ke keemat tum kya jano, ramesh babu? eshwar ka aasirwad hota hai ek chutki sindoor, suhagan sir ka taj hota hai, ek chutki sindoor, har aurat ka khawb hota hai ek chutki sindoor..."
This famous dialogue by Deepika Padukone from the movie OM SHANTI OM, speaks about the vermilion powder popular amongst married women in India. Just a pinch (chutki) of it on one’s forehead, is all it takes to tell whether a woman is married or not.
The vermilion powder, commonly known as 'sindoor' is used by married Indian women not only because of the traditional values and honour attached with it, but also because it adds a certain glow to the face. Mrs. Shweta Khanna, Marketing Executive of a reputed firm says, "My husband insists on him putting the sindoor in my maang (parting of hair) daily, as he rightly feels that it makes me feel special."
The sindoor, traditionally used to be a red powder made from herbal extracts. But the composition has now changed from being herbal to mercury and lead compounds, which are highly toxic for the soft nature of the hair. To combat the growing problem of hair loss due to sindoor, Lakme, famous cosmetic brand, has come up with a product which rightly identifies the growing anxiety among women – "the jewel sindoor". The product is designed and tested to suit women and their delicate scalp. It comes in a lip-gloss shaped bottle, along with a brush applicant, which one can use to apply the maroon liquid in the straight parting of the hair. On application, the liquid quickly dries up and has a long lasting effect. To match up to the autumn-winter collection, Lakme has come up with three shades of the sindoor – Pearl, Coral and Gold, keeping in mind the season of marriages, where nowadays everything has to be correctly contrasted and matched to one’s attire. An added advantage of the product is that, because it is liquid in nature and has a brush along with it, women can create a tiny design on the upper forehead for an added touch of glamour. Priced at a very nominal 200 INR, the product has already captured the hearts of many brides and brides to-be, who wish to "jewel up" their weddings in every possible way. The jewel sindoor, is therefore one of the most useful products Lakme has gifted to the women of India. Saiyona Ghosh 1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (9 votes, average: 3.11 out of 5)
