A Thousand Splendid Suns

thousand splendid 198x300 A Thousand Splendid Suns

I just picked up this book recently and was wondering whether ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ would be as good as ‘The Kite Runner’, and here’s the answer: No. It’s better, much better.

Hosseini did it again. A thousand splendid suns is a triumph. This heart rendering novel is about the soul stirring connection between two victimized souls.

When Mariam is fifteen she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed to hide her shameful past. Nearly two decades later she meets Laila, a local teenager, who like her is also caught up in the onslaught poor luck and the Taliban. And it is then when a friendship stronger than that of a mother and a daughter grows between them. Their lives become a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. .....yet the love between them makes them act in unexpected ways and leads them to overcome the most horrid obstacles with determination.

This suspenseful epic moves at such a high pace that I had to keep my heart from coming out. You will find yourself unable to break away from the narrative, weeping in your heart for the poor Mariam and Laila. It is a very powerful and moving story. A must read!
